Last week I restored my laptop, and everything worked well. Now the heat spikes again, and I don’t understand why. I applied thermal grizzly kryonaut during the repair. Any explanation for the increased temperature afterward?

Excessive thermal paste, poor CPU-heatsink contact, and insufficient clamping force can lead to overheating. On my MacBook Pro, I had to reapply the paste and temperatures normalized. For future work, spread the paste in a dot pattern starting from the corner of the die and working outward. Edited May 31, 2020 by CommanderAlex

Confirm the cooler is securely fastened. Check if thermal paste has leaked. Verify the fan operates adequately to maintain optimal temperatures. For Intel Core processors on laptops, consider using the Intel XTU utility to adjust voltage and improve cooling.

I used a small amount of thermal paste. I saw videos showing excessive paste causing high CPU temperatures, but GamersNexus said it had little impact. The paste leaked onto the sides of the die and landed on the green chip.

Likely insufficient paste application or the cooler wasn't secured properly. The most serious outcome could be heatpipe damage (they're very delicate).

It's highly probable you didn't tighten the cooler properly. Excess paste won't cause much trouble since it will be pushed aside when you secure it. Numerous experiments confirm this. Be sure to tighten it in an X pattern gradually, a few turns at a time.

It seems the temperatures dropped shortly after the re-paste, which might have slightly loosened the cooler mount. I’d check if the cooler can be secured tighter now.

The change in paste might not have been significant due to the thermal behavior of the specific processor you're using. No one here actually understands what that means for giving clear advice.
