Poor performance or low frame rate on RTX 2070
Hi, I previously had a GTX 970 before switching to an RTX 2070. Even after the upgrade, many games still struggle to run smoothly at 60fps on maximum settings, like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, No Man's Sky, Cities Skylines, and similar titles. Even when I manage 60fps, it tends to be unstable between 45 and 60fps. I have an i7-4790k CPU, a new Corsair CS Series™ Modular CS850M PSU, and 14GB of RAM. Living in a desert means it's usually hot, but I'm not sure if that's the cause. Anyone know how to resolve this issue?
I looked into the game's configuration options, but the ray tracing feature wasn't available. Would I need to turn it off using the NVIDIA control panel?
I just looked and found that ray tracing is only available in some games, not all of them. I haven't turned it on.
As far as I understand, vsync only restricts the frame rate to match the monitor's capabilities (like 60fps), but my issue is that certain games fluctuate between 40 and 60fps due to FPS drops. I've reinstalled drivers after using DDU, yet I'm uncertain if a fresh Windows installation will resolve it, so I might consider that option too. This problem appears only with next-gen open-world titles, even when running at 1/4 VRAM, whereas games like Rainbow Six Siege or Dark Souls III are unaffected. I'm wondering if the CPU might be the cause, but I don't have enough certainty to confirm.
One thing I would check is to make sure your driver isn't automatically optimizing all of your games. There is an option in the nvidia drivers to automatically do that to all games and it is super terrible.
Its a bit extreme but I've had cards not work properly before and have solved it by taking them out and re seating them in the pcie slot.
Your mention about desert heat does make me wonder what sort of temperatures and usage readings your getting on your card and cpu. I know when its in the middle of summer where I am if I'm just air cooling my devices they can thermal throttle because I have no A/C
I turned off automatic optimization a while back, since I understand it's really bad. The CPU and GPU remain at 50°C during idle most of the time, but they drop when it gets cooler. I’ll try re-seating the card in the PCIe slot to check if that helps.
