I checked back into Swtor to verify if the issue was resolved and saw if many problems were fixed. I ended up purchasing two months of subscriptions, the expansion, and 2400 cartel coins. The main problem I’ve faced so far is on new planets where there are occasional lag spots—ping jumps seem random, and it’s not just me. Some teammates on TeamSpeak reported the same issue too. It’s not a game-breaking problem, but it can be frustrating when you’re moving around. Overall, it’s still playable, though it might annoy you if you’re in a hurry. If you’re curious or had a bad experience, I’d suggest giving it another shot—it’s actually a pretty good game now, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next. Let me know if you want a tour!
I last verified the shop was fully P2W, though I wasn’t updated on recent changes. I just watched a short clip of Towelie during his livestream, and it still looked like that. The game is pretty much over, with only a few loyal fans and occasional newcomers but no one really playing it well.
I really enjoy the game... which is why I like the avatar. Usually I play it solo. The narratives are actually quite engaging. I wish more of my real-life friends played it too. The moments when you're constantly reminded it's an MMO—like the flashpoints and Herioics—aren't bad on their own, but they can feel repetitive as you progress and wait for others to join the same quests.
Nothing in the cash shop offers any real help during the first match. I only have 3k cartel coins from past subscriptions and won’t be grabbing anything unless it looks interesting. If you don’t subscribe, you can’t run warzones or operations without a pass, which you can buy for around the credit limit. For ranked PvP, you can play as a PvP player—just need to have purchased the expac and have a friend to join you. I’ve played the game a lot and believe it’s doing well. If you don’t have an active group of friends or guilds wanting to play, the game might seem less enjoyable... but honestly, there’s no single way the cash shop is useful unless you’re chasing cool gear. (Which it is ;D)
It's understandable you're comparing this experience to other titles. You likely encountered performance issues on a less powerful system, and the overall gameplay felt lacking in polish. The engine struggled, especially with endgame content, which hurt the overall experience. While some aspects like the agent story and character progression were enjoyable, the lack of balance and performance limitations made it less appealing compared to other offerings. Many players left due to these factors, not just because of the free-to-play model, but because of technical constraints and an unbalanced gameplay loop. Despite these challenges, certain elements like Holocrons and specific classes stood out positively.
It was my first time playing on a laptop with a dual-core AMD processor that I bought two years ago for $400. At the lowest settings, I managed around 10 to 15 frames per second near the lowest resolution. The game still worked but wasn’t as enjoyable as it is today. There are definitely problems with older hardware, just like with any game. Still, I believe developers have made more progress than people realize, and the game needs even better work moving forward. I’m really looking forward to what’s coming up for Superstar and can’t wait for the new movie—people will probably flock back in large numbers.
If they redo a engine/api in the game? Yup the game could definately take off. Like I said I really liked the game. Problem is? When people with laptops lesser Intel's can't play it well and they can't do large events and or large scale pvp? The game will never take off. See Wild Star. See Guild Wars 2. See Tera. SWTOR had good combat, fun classes, fun leveling. Like I said the core of the game was fantastic.
Wildstar has become less active and guild wars 2 appears to lack a solid player base. I really like Tera, but it seems it doesn’t fit my preferences for anime-style games. Swtor offers strong storytelling and good graphics after a while. I believe more people will join as technology improves, and the main reason I stopped was my outdated computer making it hard to play and participate in PvP. Now I have a powerful PC and can enjoy the game without issues.
I once enjoyed this game. It was available before it switched to a paid model with two subscriptions. I didn’t play much after that. I spent around 18 hours on a Sith Marauder and then realized it wasn’t worth it, so I stopped. I’d have revisited it if needed, but Diablo 3 arrived and I spent about a million hours there. Maybe I’ll try it again now that you mentioned it. What benefits do subscriptions offer when the game is free?
