Performance issues with the 3060 Ti and i9 9900K can occur due to bottlenecks.
I have my 3060 TI right now. It’s currently connected to an I5 9600K. I’m worried it’ll be too complicated to change the motherboard for AMD or switch to something else, so I’m stuck with the 1151 socket. I was considering an i9 9900K or an I7 9700K. I’m thinking about moving to AMD, and maybe getting the Ryzen 5 5600X. But I’d need a budget board under $70 that supports it. If anyone has advice, it would be helpful.
I also want to know what’s limiting performance on the I9 and I7 with my current setup. And what’s the best path forward? I’m open to other suggestions.
My current setup includes an I5 9600K, Asus Tuf Gaming 3060 TI, OC V2, 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM at 60Hz, a 650W PSU, 500GB SSD, one 1TB HDD, and one 2TB HDD.
The CPU should work just fine. You don’t need any adjustments, particularly if you’re only using 60Hz. Upgrading to 9700K or 9900K isn’t worth the expense.
He simply confirmed the CPU is okay. However, if your thoughts are set and you wish to upgrade, proceed without hesitation.
Keep what you currently have until you're prepared for a more significant improvement. A 5600X would provide a solid boost, mainly by increasing the number of threads. Single-core speed is also helpful, though not to an extreme extent unless you're using a high refresh monitor. You might also look at a model like the 11400F, which offers similar performance to a 5600X but at a lower price. Either option will likely require a new graphics card and faster RAM. In short, stay with what you have or you'll need to fully commit to a new CPU, motherboard, RAM, and monitor to get the most out of the upgrade.
Unless you're obsessing over every frame at 1080p, the 9600K remains a solid gaming CPU. I didn't see any gains in performance when switching from 9600K to 5900X at 1440p with my 2060 Super.
Invest in a fresh monitor, as it's likely holding you back. Why purchase a 3060Ti with 1080p/60 if you're already facing problems? If the issue exists, why haven't you addressed it? Monitor > CPU.
If you mainly play games like Flight Simulator that can't push hign framerates or you like to run raytracing with that card, that's alright. You won't be getting 100+ fps anyway in those cases even at 1080p. I could even just see high detail AAA games, since fps doesn't matter much. But 75 vs 60 is already a 25% improvement, so it's not nothing.
These displays are becoming quite affordable these days, often priced between $250 and $300. I usually choose them over higher-end options like the 9700k/9900k. The 3060Ti can manage that quality without trouble. It might not always run at the highest frame rates, but the clarity is sufficient.
