Performance data from Steam VR is puzzling.
Hello. After reviewing the 'Post your Steam VR test results' discussion and trying different operating systems with various drivers, I have a few points for you VR specialists. How does a 1x GTX 970 outperform a 2x GTX 780 when used in SLI? Is it the additional 1/2GB memory that matters, or are the new architectures behind the 970 responsible? Could driver tuning be the key factor? Also, raw performance isn't always the main thing—Windows 7 seems to work much better than Windows 10. I feel a bit let down, thinking some companies might be using this test just for marketing. Valve is clearly aiming to launch VR hardware, and about 2% of PC users are already prepared. It’s possible Nvidia and AMD will see increased sales as well. Imagine the complex boardroom discussions that could arise. The idea of combining GPUs in SLI or X-fire sounds promising, though I’m not sure how it would help manufacturers. I’m eager to see Linus and his team evaluate the Rift and Vive. I’m hoping the Vive will be the standout option. Who knows what the future holds?
