Hello. I need to purchase a computer with an RX 480 but my budget is very limited. In the future I plan to upgrade to an i7 6700 or 6700K (you can buy the i7 6700 without the "K" now). Initially, I want to install an i3 6100 with a B150 board. I understand I can't overclock that board, but I have another choice: a Pentium G4500 with a Z170 board. What should I pick and is it possible to overclock a CPU in a B150 board? As a teenager, I should probably save up for the i7 (Sky Lake or Baby Lake if available) in a year and six months. I just want to play Spore, SimCity, Hitman, Battlefield 4 and be able to run 2020 games at 1080p 60fps. I also want the PC to browse the internet smoothly without lag. The i7 will only be slow if I overclock it between 300 to 400MHz, so when should I consider overclocking? Can I upgrade the CPU in a B150 board or should I go with a Pentium and a Z170 board for the future i7? Thanks.

The two cores and threads will significantly limit your performance in games. The i3 6100 will work much better. Since you don't plan to overclock in the future, consider getting the B150 and 6100, then upgrade to a 6700 later.

the only board that allows overclocking a CPU is one with a Z series chipset. you can't do it with B or H series chipsets, and the loophole has been closed, meaning you can't overclock non-K CPUs either.

Captaincharisma: The main board you use can overclock a CPU with a Z series chipset, but not with B or H series. They also fixed the issue where you couldn't overclock on non-K CPUs, so your options are limited there too. Should I pick Pentium or i3?

Choose the Pentium G4500 with a Z170 board since you can upgrade it and it will save you money if you don't have enough funds yet.

Gizego :
captaincharisma :
the on;ly board you can overclock a CPU in is one with a Z series chipset. you cannot overclock with a B or H series chipset. and they closed the loophole where you could overclock on a non-K CPU too so you are out of luck there too
Should i choose pentium or i3?
if money isn't an option between those two then the I3 would be the better choice

Sizzling:
The two cores and threads will really limit your performance in games, the i3 6100 will work much better. Instead of overclocking later, just get the B150 & 6100 and upgrade to a 6700 later. When I need a stronger CPU, I can buy a new computer and discard the old one. Keep the HDD and chassis (unless I switch to an eatx motherboard). That way, I can access newer CPU sockets and faster RAM and GPU. The i7 6700 is more affordable than the 6700k. Thanks.

Go for the pentium g4500 with a z170 board because you can upgrade it and it will cost less if you don’t have the funds yet.
Not really. Most Amazon sellers don’t ship to Portugal, so I’ll need to purchase it from a local shop. They’re a bit pricey. For example, the Msi z170 pcmate on Amazon is 130 euros.
Pc says the same thing – same model, 130 euros (more than a dollar).
I could also buy an i7 6700 without K and after eight years I can upgrade again and sell the old one.

If budget is tight, I3 seems better. A B150 board works fine without Pentium, and it's more future-proof than a Z170 board for an I7 later.

Thanks. I3 but prefer B150 over Pentium, and avoid the Z170 for an i7 in the future.
