I assembled my PC without intending to use NVLink, so I bought a motherboard with just one PCIe slot that has eight lanes for NVLink. Now I’m thinking about enabling it and wondering if I could use a riser with two eight-lane slots, connect it to my 4.0 x16 port, install two 2080 supers, and run NVLink. Or would the motherboard be incompatible with any changes? Thanks for the specs: Ryzen 9 3900X, MPS, x570 gaming edge, 32GB DDR4, 3600MHz RAM.
A creator built a motherboard featuring multiple X16 ports yet failed to implement SLI compatibility. What makes sense?
no there is only one x16 slot, i was asking if i could use a riser to split the 16 into two x8s. mostly its a question of if the hardware supports it would the software work or if theres a part of the bios or anything similar that allows nvlink which my board simply doesnt have
x16 measures the same length, but not every x16 port is designed for x16 signals. Your board includes one x16 and one x8 slot, which is typical for most mainstream boards. There aren’t enough PCIe lanes to connect two x16 slots simultaneously, so they’re limited to x16/x8 configurations. Despite this, the board doesn’t support SLI, meaning you won’t be able to use dual 2080s on this specific motherboard.
They’re still making mistakes. They added two 16-pin slots, there were enough lanes for both at x8, which is what SLI usually did, but they forgot to add the SLI software. That’s the most affordable part.
Hes a bit confused since only 1 of them is wired up x16 and the other x8.. and this this is what it means, when the PCIE x16 is actually the slot name, not just the electrical wiring of the slot. But regardless, this board doesnt support SLI.
