PC stuttering
PC stuttering
Games are running sluggishly and overall lack smooth performance. CS:GO used to be fast, just like Overwatch. After upgrading to a new SSD and reinstalling Windows, I now experience stuttering in every game I play. PUBG is particularly affected on most maps except Miramar, which remains smooth. Benchmarks showed everything was fine (as stated), with no bottlenecks detected. I’m seriously considering selling my PC and buying a new one because I can’t enjoy any games I used to like. I purchased the latest GPU and SSD thinking I’d be able to play all my favorite titles, but now even those are not working.
CPU: i5 10400f
GPU: RX 6600
PSU: Seasonic S12III
RAM: Kingston Fury 16GB 2666 (single-channel: no issues before, passed tests)
MOBO: H410-HDV (ASRock)
HDD: 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM
SSD: 512 Silicone Power SATA
I ran numerous benchmarks, reinstalled Windows multiple times, and adjusted various Windows settings (prefetch, HPET, page file).
Is there any software that can identify the cause of the stuttering? I really don’t understand what’s going on.
Stuttering refers to a temporary shortage of necessary resources.
Common causes include CPU or GPU issues.
It might also stem from insufficient RAM or thread limitations in multiplayer settings.
Having only one stick of RAM slows your CPU because it restricts dual-channel operation. The impact is modest.
Running other applications like Discord can also affect performance.
Malware infections may further reduce your speed.
I know that, but the issue is that prior to the stuttering, I was using the identical system with the same single-channel RAM, which worked without any problems (Overwatch didn’t have stuttering or microstuttering before, just like CS:GO).
Here’s a revised version of your text:
I went through a brief test period. The same PC without the SSD and the new GPU (previously had a GTX 960) performed well. Overwatch ran smoothly at low settings, CS:GO behaved normally, and Rainbow Six was fast even at a lower setting.
After getting the new GPU, everything stayed consistent, though performance dropped at higher graphics levels. Overwatch remained smooth (only the game I tested from those three). This was using the same Windows version.
I installed the SSD and started experiencing odd delays of about five seconds during Overwatch when it wasn’t running smoothly. It was quite choppy, but still maintained high FPS. Fast forward—playing Overwatch a while ago feels like a long time. I also tried PUBG; it ran smoothly on Miramar except for minor stutters, though other maps like Erengel or Vikendi kept stuttering constantly. Warzone 2 and Apex Legends were equally problematic, even with over 75 FPS and perfect smoothness in training.
When attempting battle royale, the game also stuttered excessively. Additionally, Genshin Impact now stutters, unlike before. I also attempted Vampire Masquerade, which had similar stuttering issues as PUBG, Apex, and Warzone 2.
Regarding the SSD, I tried several things:
- Tested it using CrystalDiskInfo—it worked fine.
- Switched the page file to an HDD (still had stutters).
- Removed the HDD and kept only the SSD (still experienced stutters).
It’s important to note that benchmarks were consistently smooth. I plan to retest this weekend and compare the results with the benchmarks.
I have a comparable issue and I've been trying for years without success, but perhaps this could assist you.
If the issues began after using an SSD and installing new Windows:
Consider using an older Windows version
Upgrade drivers for all your devices, not just the GPU
Install the latest GPU driver and clear with DDU before
Update your BIOS to the newest version
Ensure PCIe 3 or 4 is enabled in BIOS based on your SSD
Toggle Windows Game Modus off
Set Powerplan to Ultimate or High Performance
Turn off GameDVR
Disable Root Enum Device & MS Device A. Root Enumerator in Device-Manager
Use dedicated SSD testing suites
Run Intelligent Standby List Cleaner
I hope this helps.
