I would obtain a PCI card myself. I’ve used USB versions before and they weren’t as reliable.

I’d prefer a standard Ethernet connection. I think laptops with Wi-Fi aren’t worth it. But that’s just my opinion.

He has an old desktop in his room. I prefer wireless instead of running Ethernet or cables through walls since it’s a rented space. A dongle works well because it’s easy to take down when needed. Using a PCI card would require surgery each time we wanted to add or remove the connection, which isn’t practical.

Wouldn't it be better to set up your router yourself, enabling features like MAC address whitelisting or 802.11x? If your son is interested in the internet, he could visit a nearby store and purchase an affordable Wi-Fi USB adapter, making it almost invisible.

I’d really like someone to visit the store with him, since he doesn’t travel alone. Even if the shop was right next to it, he still seems hesitant because he doesn’t really think about things deeply. (IQ of a 5–6 year old) Changing the router settings every time I needed a connection is way more effort than just plugging in a dongle. (That sounds pretty obvious!)

Typically, routers offer an option to block internet access for a particular MAC address during certain periods. This feature is especially useful for managing devices that shouldn’t be connected at specific times.

However, I wouldn't have anticipated needing this adjustment at that moment—it's more about remembering when it's necessary rather than a fixed schedule like 5:30 every Thursday.
