These are my top picks. Vivaldi works well every day, Falkon suits my bank, supermarket and regular suppliers. This is my suggestion for windows users; I relied on it for years while still working professionally in windows and it offers the least "big leap" to use both. For non-power users, I usually go with the default mint environment (Cinnamon?), its settings interface is calmer, though both are easier than Win8+. I don’t personally use either, but the rumors suggest both are solid options. It’s not brand new—think of it like checking how long a chipset has been around; if it’s not very old, we can look up drivers quickly to help decide.

Your computer from after 1950 can likely run some Linux versions if you look into options.

I've spent more than two decades crafting my own kernel, so I know firsthand how little most people understand. That’s perfectly fine—people from every level of experience join here, which is exactly what sets this apart.

Since most users don’t develop their own kernel, I support my advice. For those who do, congratulations on your work and hope more people follow suit. As a newcomer, you’re likely to create more issues than benefits. Once you’ve tried a fresh OS, it’s wise to understand how to rebuild the system and identify unnecessary components.

Mint relies on Ubuntu, known for many poor design choices. Consider Void instead.
