Seeking Linux alternatives, hoping to transition from Windows but looking for a solid choice for my new machine. Prefer an OS that handles web browsing, multiple tabs, video/movie playback, gaming, and smooth usability—similar to Windows feel. Would be great if it’s easy to get used to, especially since I’m accustomed to the Windows experience. Any suggestions? I’m considering a test on my older laptop before making the switch. Thanks!

The challenge lies in the games and the Desktop Environment, not the distribution itself. The top recommended distribution is Linux Mint, with Cinnamon or Mate as suitable desktop options. Zorin and Q4OS are also viable alternatives. For gaming, Bazzite receives high praise. Regarding browsers, popular choices include Firefox, Chromium, Chrome, Brave, Opera, SeaMonkey, Vivaldi, Tor, LYNX, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, Midori, Epiphany, Falkon, and many more. Please note that availability varies by distribution’s app store; you can usually get these from official sites or online platforms. If uncertain, downloading and installing Ventoy is a good first step. It lets you create a bootable USB, copy ISO files, and during boot you can select the desired installation. Installing in RAM helps you test the system without affecting existing data. Once closed, it wipes RAM content and restarts like a fresh setup.

Bazzite gets a +1 rating. It ships with KDE Plasma, which defines the look of the desktop environment and generally follows a Windows-like style. The app store integrates well with Flatpaks, offering a wide range of applications. It runs on a modern kernel with many drivers and updates for hardware compatibility—unlike some Linux distributions that lock you into older versions. For gaming, the Steam Flatpak works smoothly unless you have multiple drives; otherwise, it performs well in practice. In simpler terms, Bazzite feels similar to Windows, making it easy to adapt, and it features a straightforward app store for almost any need. If you want more control, explore what an immutable distro entails. Bazzite is built on Fedora Silverblue and bundles everything required for typical gaming, eliminating the need for manual setup. Regular Fedora works too, especially if you prefer not to stick with an immutable system.

For gaming, CachyOS remains the leading choice.

What titles are available? If you’re focused on Steam Deck verified or playable games, Bazzite shines. For mainstream online multiplayer experiences, Linux might fall short.

Sure, I'll focus on single-player experiences similar to cyberpunk or Indiana Jones adventures.
