So I'm comparing the i5 9400F to other options I found. It's a new 160-bucks machine in my area, meant only for gaming. I checked the used market and mostly got i7 8700T, Ryzen 5 2600X, Ryzen 7 2700, or Ryzen 7 1800X. These seem similar in price locally. But I really don't think any of them would be a solid choice. What do you all think?

Budget or country details not specified. Monitor resolution and refresh rate unclear. Ownership of the 1080ti is unknown.

Yep. I already have the 1080Ti. As i was able to get it a veeery low price. And i have a 240Hz 1080p monitor. I get that its weird for some people to cheap out on cpu etc but its not like i didnt cheap out on the gpu nor the monitor. Trust me. I got them 2nd hand dirt cheap. Hungary btw. And for the cpu i'm plannin to spend round 200. I'm really looking at whats best for price per performance. If something costs 160 and another one thats faster 10% and costs 190 or somthing i aint for that 30bucks 10% improvement. Thats not a great price per performance in my opinion. Maybe becouse now i'm taking this 9400f as my baseline or idk.

For 240hz I’d definitely choose an R5 3600 with 3600mhz CL16 RAM, or whatever fits your chosen motherboard. Since it’s more than 10% faster than the 2600 MSI B450 boards with USB bios flashing, it’s a reliable option.

You have several choices in your budget, including the Ryzen 5 2600, Ryzen 7 2700, and Ryzen 5 3600. These models are solid picks. I’d recommend the Ryzen 7 2700 if you need more power, as it offers an 8-core processor while the 3600 provides stronger single-core performance.

I'm disappointed with this deal since it's priced at 220 bucks in my area. The high-speed RAM and quick timing are nice, but it's still 60 bucks more just for the CPU. It seems like a better choice than the i5, but it's not a huge improvement. Even used versions are around 30 bucks more. Maybe I'm just looking to save money here.

You'll need a powerful processor, at least the R5 3600. Otherwise, achieving 240fps will be extremely difficult, even for simple gaming.

Waiting a week or two before purchasing is worthwhile for the long term. Otherwise, the R5 2600 would be better than the locked i5 because it should still assist with the 1% and 0.1% frame rate improvements. A 3200mhz CL16 works too and can be overclocked on the Ryzen 3000.

Heheh. I upgraded his PC with a 1070 and an i7 6700k, clocked at 4.5Ghz. It managed to hit around 240FPS in Fortnite with competitive settings. He definitely plays Fortnite competitively.

In the long term, using Intel would likely be a better upgrade route.
