My small business network is causing me trouble. I have one computer that has normal download speeds (90-100 mbps) but basically no upload speed at all. It's only 0.23 Mbps for uploads. I've tried every fix, like using a different Cat5 cable from another PC that has working upload speeds. So I know it's not the network itself. This is something specific to my computer. I cleared my DNS settings, reset my IP address, and changed the adapter settings so they no longer pick the Domain server automatically but instead let me set them manually. Nothing worked. Could the Network Interface Card (NIC) be causing bad upload speeds? I don't even know what else could be wrong. I tried everything else. The troubleshooter didn't find any problems. I went as far as to run a cat6 cable from my switch all the way through my office directly to this NIC. Any ideas would be really helpful.

If you already have an image ready or need one to start, that's probably where I'd begin. But I'm not a networking pro, so I can't tell you about all those other things. It feels like if you're using a totally different computer and the wrong cable at the trouble spot, and it won't work, then the problem is likely just stuck there on that one machine.

It feels like if you're using a totally different computer and the wrong cable at the trouble spot, and it won't work, then the problem is likely just stuck there on that one machine.

Hey, if you are looking at this, it comes down to N.I.C. I bought a USB-to-Ethernet adapter and suddenly my upload speeds went back to normal. I updated the drivers on the N.I.C., even uninstalling and reinstalling them. My guess is that it's hardware-related rather than software, though I'm not 100% sure yet. Now here is the big question: should I just leave the adapter installed and call this solved, or should I keep testing and banging my head against the keyboard? I don't know for sure right now. Once the problem is fixed, if anyone else learns something new from this, please let me know. Thanks so much for all your great info.

Since I first posted here, two more workstations have joined us in the network and doing exactly the same thing. Download speeds are incredibly fast while upload speeds are painfully slow. My first sign is that users are complaining about emails stuck inside their OUTBOX folders. I checked for viruses, malware, and other bad things. Now it seems like the problem is spreading. Every computer comes back looking clean. It looks like one PC gets infected every month. The first one hit was in February, then March, now April. When I check Device Manager, the N.I.C.s appear to be working fine. I also updated all drivers just in case because we still have some older PCs here that are connected. All computers run Windows 10 pro. Could these updates be causing this as a push to move everyone to windows 11? Anyway once I switch over to using a USB N.I.C, everything works perfectly fine. I really want to find the real cause because switching to a USB device is just like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. Anyone seeing this issue? Thanks again for any insights you can share.

How many devices are in the Small Business network? What types of devices: computers, printers, storage (NAS), phones? Is there a mix of wired and wireless? Make and model: modem, router? The Router's logs might give some clues. Check the router's settings for how many devices allow itself to connect, how many IP addresses are assigned (both dynamic and static), which ones are connected, MAC addresses, rules, QoS limits, and other settings that affect systems on the network. Are there any Static IPs? = = = = Look at Task Manager, Resource Monitor, and Process Explorer in slow upload computers. Note: Use Process Explorer from Microsoft, it's free and safe to use. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysint...s-explorer The goal is to see what resources are being used, how much (%), and what specific program or tool is using each resource. Use all three tools at the same time but only one at a time. Compare a fast upload to a slow upload PC to find the differences. Run these tools while NOT uploading to get a baseline of what your test/slow upload computer looks like normally. Keep that window open so it stays visible, then start doing normal uploads again and watch for any changes. Look at a slow upload computer before (if possible) using the USB Network Card. Do this when the NIC is not installed or if the PC has a slow upload problem. Then do it after installing the NIC and when the upload speeds work fine. I would also compare the results of "ipconfig /all" and "arp -a" for both slow and fast upload systems. Run them again when the computer is slow, then run them again when it is fast. Keep a record of all IP addresses given to each device on the network. Look for conflicts or any other IP address errors. Draw out a simple diagram showing every single device, its IP address, MAC address, and so on. Map out how the problem moves around and look at the picture. There might be clues in there too. See what you can find. Be careful, keep your notes handy, use the diagram. If you haven't already done this then write down as much history as you can remember from before. The main thing is to figure out what is different (or changes) about any computer that suddenly has slow uploads and then becomes a fast upload computer again through whatever means it uses. My guess is an IP address conflict of some kind, possibly related to a DHCP IP address moving around among computers on the network. This will eventually cause a conflict again sooner or later.

I really appreciate your detailed reply. I haven't had the time to work on this so it goes back in my backlog but today something similar happened and I am getting started right now. It is a terrible thing that I'm once again patching things up with a USB network card. As far as the information you requested, there are about 20 workstations, a few small printers which connect directly to the PCs via that USB NIC. There is one main office printer, two blueprint printers, one NAS, and all our phones or devices for video call support. So from the wall you plug in your phone then into the PC. We have 1 server I am running 2 Hyper-V drives; one acts as a domain and holds most of the shared folders while the other is specifically dedicated to QuickBooks. We do have a wireless router but nothing really connects to it except for my personal phones, an odd laptop or tablet here and there, and a DVR that is connected to the network so my boss can check our cameras from his phone. Anyway thanks again for your reply I am going to print this out and start working on it. If my breakdown gave you any other ideas please let me know. I will update you if I come across anything. Best

Using a USB NIC works as the solution. Usually, the Ethernet cable goes from the wall jack to the VOIP phone, then out of the phone into an existing NIC on the workstation. When this first happened, I thought my NIC was broken. To keep users running until I could swap it out, I used the USB connection instead. After that worked perfectly, I assumed that was the problem. That weekend, I replaced the NIC and had the exact same issue again. By now, it has affected 4 more PCs today. No specific time or date; no particular time period in between. So far, I've tried many things: replacing the NIC, bypassing the phone, updating the drivers on the NIC, moving the PC to a wall jack that another known good PC uses, swapping phones around, manually setting the IP address, and disabling DHCP. But I still don't know why something is happening with these phones. Or maybe I'm just telling myself that because it's not solved yet and the phones are out of my control, nothing will work.
