She recently moved from a 4060ti to a 7900xt, while I was using a 6600xt. Thinking it would be easy to just swap in my old model, I spent six hours trying without success. Monitors kept failing, and the system would crash whenever I tried to use the NVIDIA driver. I realized the issue was the motherboard—my is PCI-E gen 3, hers is gen 4. Changing it to gen 3 mode fixed the problem. I want it in gen 4 but don’t know why it won’t. Could I be using too many PCI-E lanes? It doesn’t seem likely, but I’m stuck. I reinstalled Windows, updated BIOS, and cleared CMOS, yet it still doesn’t work in gen 4. My specs are: MSI B-550 A pro Ryzen 5800x, 32 GB GSKILL Tridentz @ 3800MHz, 500GB Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 2TB, and a 700W Thermaltake PSU.

If the motherboard only supports Gen 3, the card's capabilities become irrelevant. The best option is upgrading the motherboard to Gen 4 for improved performance. However, you won't notice any performance difference between Gen 3 and Gen 4 for that card.

My motherboard is from generation 4, but her system was from generation 3. I own an MSI B550 Pro and need to switch my board into generation 3 mode in the BIOS so the card functions correctly even though it's a newer model.

Checked if the GPU received a BIOS update. Verified the connection method—directly into the motherboard or via a riser card. Confirmed placement: top X16 slot or bottom?

I connected it straight into the top x16 port.

I would verify whether your GPU has a vBIOS update available and install it if necessary.

I didn't consider that but I looked at techpowerup and I'm using the newest BIOS they display, it's a Gigabyte 4060 Ti 8GB gaming OC

Looking at this, the more concerning part im seeing is that its running only in x8 and not x16. NVM, 4060ti is only x8 lanes anyways. Could always try reflashing the VBIOS and see if that helps/fixes, if not, then I would open a support case with Gigabyte and MSI to investigate.

Yeah, the mid range cards these days all run in x8 but the problem is when using PCI-E gen 3 it's actually only running at x4. I guess I'll open a ticket with them and see what they say and try reflashing in the meantime. Very strange. Probably just with Gigabyte because the 6600xt was also gen 4 and it didn't give me any problems at all.

Tap the icon beside GPU speeds to launch a render test. Check if any adjustments occur. It might update automatically based on requirements.
