Hey everyone! I’m facing an issue with Edge 88 and Excel that causes flickering when I resize the windows. Here’s how it usually happens on my PC (though it might not happen on yours):
I open either Edge or Excel, not in full screen, pick any edge of the window, and try to resize it. I’m planning to upload a short clip showing this, hoping my phone can capture the flickering.
The video I’ll share is from my work PC using HDMI:

And here’s another one from my personal setup via DisplayPort:

So far, the apps behave normally—games and videos play without issues. I’ve tried several fixes:
- Turned on FreeSync (no improvement)
- Used a background color picker setting (still no luck)
- Disabled Hardware Acceleration in Edge (works, but Excel still has problems)
- Enabled HDR (helped, though it strains my eyes)
- Switched to HDMI (also resolved the issue)
- Kept using DisplayPort for now
I noticed something interesting: when I play YouTube or other heavy videos at 1080p or 4K, the flickering seems to disappear temporarily. This makes me think the problem might be related to GPU performance under load.
Additional notes:
- My PC was built last Sunday, so it’s been less than a week.
- The graphics card I have is the latest Nvidia model, and I updated the driver via GeForce Experience.
- I’m using the official DisplayPort cable that came with the monitor.
- Hope this helps someone else out there!
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I experimented with several adjustments: connected the PC to another monitor using DisplayPort (version 1.2, compatible with your screen's 1080p), but the issue persisted. Tested different display settings like 1.4 and 1.1 on the screen, yet nothing worked. Also checked Windows scaling at 100%—still no improvement. I’m running out of options now.
I discovered a discussion where users are experiencing the same problem. It seems Nvidia Hotfix 461.51 for the video driver might resolve it, though it didn’t work for me. I think the issue could be more linked to the screen rather than the PC itself, but I’ve checked all possible settings without success. Updating the driver didn't resolve the issue. Adjusting settings also failed to help. Switching from DisplayPort 3 to DisplayPort 1 on the graphics card didn't work. Turning off G-SYNC didn't fix it either, and enabling it in windowed mode also didn't solve the problem. I realize my monitor isn't G-SYNC compatible, so I'm testing different options.
I'm facing the same challenge and it's really frustrating. The issue disappears when I reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz. Still, it doesn't run as smoothly as before. Disabling hw acceleration in Edge, Chrome, or Office helps, but not completely. If I remove the GeForce driver from Windows Update (version 456.71, DCH), everything functions properly even at 100Hz. Installing the GeForce driver from the official NVIDIA site fixes the problem—even at 100Hz. When I switch my graphics card to a different model (970 instead of 2080ti), the issue disappears. Even after reinstalling Windows, the flickering returns as soon as I install the latest NVIDIA driver and run games at 100Hz. I've tried reinstalling Windows multiple times, adjusting settings, and even using different cables, but nothing stops the flickering once the new driver is installed. I'm starting to think the GPU itself might be faulty. I haven't made any changes beyond installing the OS and drivers. This situation is really annoying.
Following the update to NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 461.09 or later, certain desktop applications might experience flickering or lag during window resizing on specific PC setups | NVIDIA (custhelp.com). The issue has been resolved.
I also resolved the problem by removing the Nvidia driver (461.40) and allowing Windows to locate a new one (457.51). I also saved all available Nvidia drivers from the site and began installing them step by step, checking each version to identify which caused the issue. So far, 457.51 and 460.79 are working fine; I didn’t test the others. Based on the info from https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/...sktop-apps), the problem appears to have started with driver 461.09. Personally, I’m not experiencing any issues with driver version 460.89 (the latest before this one) until Nvidia improves their driver coding. It’s odd the post has been online since February 10—or even earlier. I wonder why I never found it. Thanks Google... such a great search engine! (ー_ー)!! Edited February 24, 2021 by Juan Jose Bora
