In theory it's possible, but if the boot loader or partition differs for the external device, it might not boot from the internal one without special techniques.

yes. there is a bootdisk called clonezilla that will clone all types of drives as long as the destination drive is the same size or larger than the primary drive. you'd have to plug in the OS usb, then the clonezilla usb, then boot to the clonezilla and copy it to the harddrive.

It means the secondary drive must match or exceed the size of the main boot device. So with a 1.2TB drive, you can't boot from a smaller 512GB drive unless you meet that requirement.

when the target storage exceeds the source drive, the process fails. however, clonezilla offers an intelligent feature allowing you to clone to a smaller drive when the main drive has limited available space. for instance, with a 1TB drive and a 512GB drive, even if only 128GB remains on the larger drive, it can still be used successfully. this capability has been useful for me recently.
