Hey yall, I'm a noob here. I am steadily saving up for the 5800x3d after being recommended this CPU for my MOBO as they said it is arguably the best CPU for the AM4 platform However, one thing that I forgot to consider: I was recommended the 5800x3d cuz it was the best GAMING CPU I only game somewhat occasionally (tho at high settings) and equally spend as much time in programs like sony vegas and Clip Studio Paint EX. I looked a bit around and someone said that the 5800x was more the versatile one. If my current CPU rn is the Ryzen 5 2600, which would you recommend? Would the productivity performance difference be significant between 5800x or 5800x3d? Or would the difference between them be negligible relative to the sheer jump in performance im making from my 2600? Full Spec Breakdown: ASUS PRIME B450M-A RTX 2060 Ryzen 5 2600 Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 650W 80+ Gold G.Skill RipJaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin SDRAM PC4-28800 DDR4 3600

In gaming the 5800X3D performs much better, though it runs slightly slower for work tasks. It offers a significant improvement over the R5 2600.

If you're eyeing the 5800X, think about getting the 5700X instead—it's a more affordable option with better cooling performance.

It gets quite warm. I cap it at 120W using a single fan D15.

Thanks for the replies! I’ll go with either the 5800x3d or the 5700x. Regarding the combo with the MOBO—especially for the X3D or 5700x—I’m curious about how the VRMs are arranged on the board. I’ve heard the B450M-A isn’t great in that regard, and I don’t think it comes with a heat sink either.

Yeesh.. yeah uh, point a fan at the VRM and it'll be fine. Not going to be breaking any y-cruncher records with that board, however.

I’d replace the motherboards first, then install the CPU... it looks like there’s no heatsink on the VRM of that unit.

The platform offers fair suggestions for tools available in Am4.

A fan blowing at the VRM might be fine but dang, the 5800x is a power sink.

5700X works well as is, yet 5800X3D may require lowering the voltage and possibly adding active cooling if the room temperature is high.
