I’m following up on my RAM troubles. In my last post, a stick didn’t work in a 4x16GB package. I swapped that stick into my 11700k alone, and it booted up to Windows. I haven’t checked further yet. Moving on to the original 8x8GB kit, which still had issues. Four of those sticks are now in another X299 system—everything runs smoothly there. I’m assuming they’re fine, though I haven’t done a thorough test. The remaining four went into my 11700k. A couple of CTD games ran without any issues. That’s pretty concerning. I ran an Aida64 memory test, and it showed an error in about a minute. That’s suspicious. So those four sticks are now questionable. I left two in and ran the test again after five minutes. Maybe it was another stick? I swapped them over. After another five minutes, the error came back in about 12 seconds, and I repeated it twice. It seems the RAM might not have been in the same slots, which could explain the difference in speed. I’m aware that running four sticks in a dual-channel setup is more taxing than two. I didn’t enable XMP during testing, which makes it even riskier. In the past, I thought my first 6700k’s IMC was deteriorating—its 3200 2R RAM worked well for years, but started failing unless I reduced the speed to 2133. Those sticks are still in my 11700k, which is better than 1R, so I usually keep them. Now I have more variables to consider. For the 8x8GB kit, could the RAM have simply degraded over time? The fact that it happened on two different systems suggests the issue isn’t just IMC. I still need to test the 16GB module from another kit. Maybe I’ll try it in the X299 again to see if it’s detected now. This could be a sign I should upgrade to a DDR5 system.
