Obtain private IP WAN address and port settings for torrent usage
I recall using private trackers long ago that only logged your IP address, which is clearly an issue for a VPN since each user sharing the same WAN connection would be counted together. I’d really like to think things have improved now—VPNs weren’t around then, and we didn’t face an IPv4 shortage forcing ISPs to use CG-NAT.
I've always relied on a changing IP, dial-up and DSL being the most unstable, while cable would work for weeks or months depending on the provider. I believe the first tracker I used was demonoid back around 2004? I'm not sure how they tracked users but I managed to keep up. I wonder if logging in recorded your IP address—feels like the logical answer, though it's been a while... 15 years! Where did my cane end up? Definitely hit a roadblock with CGNAT in 2008 for the first time. My company had T1 lines that switched to a T-mobile modem. I quickly grasped what was happening when I noticed the modem had a private IP. I called T-Mobile and they said, "Be happy you have internet, good luck." For a few days it was tough—no emails, website down, everything seemed off.
