No, I don't require any additional cores.

The 5600x performs significantly better than your CPU. I’ve only seen the X5680 online.

The Ryzen 5600X and your Xeon 5680 both offer six cores and twelve threads. However, the Ryzen 5600X is over ten years ahead in technology, and the gap in advancements is substantial. Unless you specifically require the additional two cores or four threads—for tasks or personal preference—the Ryzen 5600X will provide a meaningful upgrade. In my opinion, I would choose the upgrade confidently.

I don't feel the same way. Mostly I run flights (XP11, DCS, MSFS) and play strategy or TV shows. Yeah, the server's old CPU is still pretty powerful for its age, but it's not my favorite setup.

MSFS handles any amount of power you throw at it, which is unusual. You should be fine with a 5600, actually—it’ll run much faster than your CPU.

Thank you for the response. It's true that the difference in technology between them shouldn't heavily impact the number of cores and frequency.

Thanks for the input. MSFS definitely stands out, haha!

I'm thinking about waiting a year before getting an AM5 or AlderLake CPU. I really don't want to always lag behind newer models. For example, when I bought the X1950GT, it had a solid GPU, but months later the "HD" versions appeared and I was caught off guard. The second time it was a 2200G, which is fine for everyday use but not for gaming. I remember seeing forum jokes suggesting that most games don't need more than four cores anyway. It seems like it depends on your needs—since I don't buy hardware often, I just prefer not to fall behind and feel like I'm paying a lot for something that might become outdated soon. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is a very good point Mark, I was completely unaware that AM5 launch window is around the corner. It makes the decision become a little harder, because even knowing that soon the prices of AM4 CPUs will drop, the parts of the DDR3 era will drop harder. I think that right now is the best time to sell the old parts because there is a lot of people running this kind of machines (maybe more than half) here in Brazil (7-1 never forget ).
