I use a PC for various tasks and enjoy playing different types of games.
Ideally you should avoid letting your FPS surpass your monitor's refresh rate. A product with strong potential for future GPU upgrades already feels limited on a 3080ti—it simply becomes a bottleneck, making other improvements irrelevant down the line. This isn't about arguing; it's about planning ahead and staying smart. Having 240fps at 60Hz is much worse than 60fps at 240Hz, as shown here.
High refreshrate Monitors are awesome. Motionclarity is another big factor, im personally just waiting for extremely more powerful GPUs and 4k 240Hz displays. Will be fun.
I’m using a 12600K paired with a 3080 chip. I’d stick to at least that configuration, and for a 3080 I’d consider going up to 5800x, 5900x, or even 12700K.
Focus mainly on gaming. I keep everything at around 117 FPS on a 120 Hz display, which means I don’t always get the most out of the GPU, but that’s fine. I play games such as Wreckfest, Teardown, GTAV, Doom Eternal, Control, Astroneer, Metro Exodus, plus several VR titles with a Valve Index (using the main driver). My goal was to reach over 100 FPS in high-quality visuals like RTX enabled and smooth performance on a 5600x monitor when paired with a 3080 Ti. I also work on some casual Blender projects, but the 5600x becomes a bottleneck for physics-heavy tasks. The GPU handles rendering well, but for complex simulations I’d likely upgrade to a 5800x or 5900x. For my typical gaming load, the 5600x performs excellently and is easy to manage.
I play ff14 mainly capped at 85hz because I leave it on all day long and there's no reason for this type of game to be sucking down 340w of power constantly But, the 3080 and 165hz is there if I need it, I just don't often. And eSports.....I'm too old to play them well anyway.
