Are you checking for a non-DRM Blu-ray player or just a standard movie Blu-ray? Since you're planning to install Pop OS, make sure it supports the type of discs you want to play.

I assembled a home theater PC for myself and my dad using refurbished or spare components. Both systems played Blu-ray movies out of the box on Pop!OS. My dad used MakeMKV to rip his Blu-rays, while I relied on VLC. The only hiccup was with an ASUS player that refused to cooperate.

I think I should check if the player functions properly—it’s an external ASUS model.

I don't recall the Asus player at all... It caused a lot of issues! Possibly some hardware restrictions in Linux interfered. Using an internal drive for Blu-ray would be better. The data speed is very fast, but USB isn't ideal for that kind of signal. (Maybe things have changed over time... My computer is quite old)

Pop-OS includes a built-in media player by default, so you won’t need to install anything extra.

Sure! I’m not sure what it’s called, but it works well with the DE. I’ll look into it this evening. If you want extra features, try VLC. In a VM without GPU acceleration, video might have problems. Not too sure about that.

I understand. I also used VLC earlier, but it caused issues with certain Blu-ray discs.

I'm using VMware since it supports optical drive passthrough. (My only optical drive is an external Blu-ray player, because my laptop runs Windows.) I managed to play DVDs through VLC, but BlueRay caused problems. I’m not sure which other programs can handle Blu-ray, though. I know Windows Media Player works with Wine, but I have no idea how to set that up. (Plus, I find Wine a bit untrustworthy, so I’d prefer something more established.)

In the application utilities folder, look for the video section on the second page. If it’s missing, you can obtain it from the Pop!_Shop. Let me know if it helps. I also shared steps for installing that questionable video player using wine in your other post. Feel free to try it out—hope it works for your Blue Ray needs. GLHV.

I’ll check whether I can install libbluray or libblurary2. The Native player tells me I must download plugins, but after clicking OK the downloads don’t appear to work. It seems the setup isn’t proceeding as expected.
