For me, my decision stemmed from the fact that stress from others is the main issue.
My preferred genre was CS and other shooters such as Battlefield.
Cheating is a widespread problem, with many lacking integrity and seeking to harm others. This isn't limited to PC; I also played Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on PS3, where I encountered players who blocked everything with crouch, but I still managed to beat them because I'm a strong player—still, it was the most frustrating when someone relied on cheating to climb ranks.
I eventually switched to Call of Duty 4 and used modded lobbies.
I gave in eventually.
Much happier afterward.
I'm not very into gaming, just play RPGs occasionally, so I haven't been much exposed to this. But I've seen a few friends streaming, and the chat comments from other players can be pretty harsh sometimes. They were playing league and if you mess up, you might get some nasty remarks. haha.
That said, you can also build great friends while playing games, there are definitely pros and cons to consider.
Back in the early days of Diablo 1, I tested it on their Battle.net site. Spending about 15 minutes online made me realize others were being rude, which wasn't too kind. From then on, I stuck to single-player.
I've mostly stopped playing with others and now concentrate on programming or offline games. I'll play online with friends, but solo gaming becomes really frustrating fast. I stick to a few communities where the people are still decent, though most are toxic—especially in Garry's Mod. I enjoy games for fun, not because someone yells "EEEEEZZZZZZZZ!" at me. Absolutely. Though it's been harder lately due to everyone's egos.
I played World of Warcraft for ten years and had some enjoyable moments, though I wasn't a PvPer—I mainly did raids, so I didn't face that much toxicity. Yes, trade chat was quite poor quality, similar to 4chan, but it wasn't mandatory. Now I'm getting bored with WoW and usually switch to Battlefield when I want a tougher challenge. I still don’t join in the in-game chat; it’s really unpleasant. I also don’t play any other online games.
That said, most of my gaming is single-player or cooperative games. Co-op games can be very fun with the right person. Someone mentioned friends, but it's tough to find any when playing solo—games!
