It doesn't. Going beyond the basics works well for the 7 series. I just preferred having a little extra. The 12+2 from the Elite seems to be the lowest I needed when I bought in October 2022. Gaming AX wasn’t available, so I chose Pro instead because "more is better" and my mind told me to go that way. I can't say why I make those choices sometimes.

All functions perform excellently with the Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX. It offers the quickest startup, the most USB ports, and the coolest PCB thanks to the built-in heatsink. You can check the hardware unboxed video for a visual guide.

You're focusing mainly on choosing the input/output arrangement that suits your requirements. Seems like performance isn't a major standout feature here.

I chose the ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F for PCIe 5 in the x16 port to guarantee future compatibility should a more powerful GPU arrive. If you don’t expect a GPU that demands such speed, sticking with the B650 is a safer option.

The 4090 only nearly fills a PCIe 3.0 slot, leaving plenty of space. The Nvidia 5090 also won’t fill a PCIe 4.0 x16 connection.

I also checked that option, but it costs significantly more than the other three I talked about at first. I chose the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI. Thanks all!

It's challenging to gauge the impact since faster speeds mean lower latency. Reports suggest performance drops on 3.0 despite not fully utilizing bandwidth. Even without overwhelming the connection, data arrives quicker, reducing chances of micro-stutters. The future role of DirectStorage remains uncertain—will games demand it or not? Mid-range cards are increasingly using fewer lanes, which affects lane allocation strategies. Like any connection, you're preparing for occasional slowdowns and trying to minimize them. I understand the concern about investing in a motherboard just to cover potential scenarios. Personally, I’d likely upgrade my CPU and use the old one elsewhere. For an ATX setup, I might opt for an ITX board instead. Most people probably sell their CPUs rather than keep them. Ultimately, it depends on your budget and future plans.
