New construction featuring 5950x and 3080TI specifications.
Hello everyone! I'm just starting out on this forum and I'm looking for some guidance. I recently assembled a new PC today. The specs are: CPU - AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, Motherboard - Asus ROG Strix B550-A, RAM - Corsair 64 GB DDR4-3600, GPU - GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, Cooler Master ML240L V2 RGB White Edition, Case fans (7 pieces), DeepCool MACUBE 310P M.2, and an 850W PSU from Corsair. My question is: I recently switched to the AMD CPU for the first time, after having an Intel i7 8700K with a 1080p display and 16GB RAM at 3200MHz. When I run certain applications or games, especially something like Genshin Impact, the temperatures rise quickly—sometimes by 50°C or more. I've updated my BIOS to version 2423, but I'm worried about overheating. I noticed my CPU temps are consistently between 50°C and 60°C, which is higher than what I experienced with the Intel model. I feel uneasy because the Ryzen 9 has many more cores, yet it still feels like an overkill for gaming. I also tried applying the cooler myself to check paste application, but even after using the X-pattern method, the temps stayed the same. Could this be a problem with the cooler placement or installation? Also, I'm unsure if I installed it correctly since it has two heat pins instead of Intel's four. I can't use a screwdriver, only my hands. What should I do?
You're aware that the 8700k can operate at high temperatures, right? That's not an issue at all. For those worried about heat, you picked a scenario with minimal airflow—it'll feel like being in an oven. Use a case with a front mesh, like the Phatneks P400A. Don't overthink the temperature spikes; they're just from heavy use and will push the cooler harder, but it's manageable. You probably won't notice much difference in Genshin Impact either—this upgrade seems unnecessary. Just keep it under 85°C, and consider moving the radiator above the CPU for better cooling.
I wasn't aware my 8700k consistently ran between 30c to 40c across most titles, but since I upgraded to a Ryzen 9 5950X I became concerned. I created a mesh mod in front of my case to improve airflow. The PC is quite powerful for Genshin Impact, though it's the only game I currently play. I also plan to try other games like Cyberpunk 2077. The Radeon is positioned above the CPU but not directly over it, and it's definitely higher than the socket.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X – Not the ideal fit for this build. RAM: Corsair 64 GB DDR4-3600 – Why the extra? You probably work with audio files. GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3080 Ti – VISION OC 12G is a better pick. CPU Cooler: Cooler Master ML240L V2 RGB White – A bit small but popular for heat dissipation. Case Fans: (x7 pieces) Corsair ML120 PRO LED White – Premium magnetic levitation model. I own a DeepCool MACUBE 310P, which isn’t suitable for the RTX 3080 Ti. I have a 3080 Ti and a 3090. Two of my cases failed with the 3080 Ti, so I upgraded to Lian Li Dynamics. M.2: Samsung 980 PRO, 1 TB SSD – More expensive option. I chose a Corsair MP 600 for a lower price. PSU: Corsair RM850 White (2021), 850W – You’ll need more power for your rig. My i9-10900K/MSI 3080 Ti has reached 789 watts and remains stable; I use 1000W units.
CPU since I only upgrade a PC every six to ten years, RAM is what I render and edit videos. CPU cooler because I went for a white build. Case fans no comment. DeepCool MACUBE 310P since I’m sticking with the white look but added a front panel cutout so it’s open. Samsung 980 Pro 1TB because it was a fresh 160 euros plus 50 euros cashback PSU since my watt meter says I’m under 520 watts, or at least what it shows. Even during a 99% GPU load I’m around 680 to 730 watts with CPU and GPU, roughly 70% to 99%. I fixed the temps by adding extra cooling on the CPU cooler – now it’s stable at 38°C idle and 61°C to 65°C under load. GPU idle is 41°C and 100% in benchmark around 71°C to 76°C. The front panel isn’t sealed like standard cases; I built my own since I have the machine for modifications (laser cutter).
Hey there! Your device was only four years old! Do you have a photo? It might have been a simpler model—4000d would’ve sufficed. Unless it’s something special, you probably needed a sturdy front panel. The PSU is good; 850W units work fine unless you start overheating, but the 5950x is way more efficient than Intel options. Don’t worry—these parts are built to handle high temps and have safety features to prevent overheating. That’s all you need. You mentioned temperatures are high, but your graphics card runs at full speed until 83°C, and your CPU is just cooling down nicely.
Oops, missed the uploads. It seems it was a 4-year-old device, and the temperature is now around 30°C during idle on the CPU.
The Fun. Mod might have been able to afford a more affordable case, though :p. Ultimately, it's your call. No major concerns here.
