You can mildly overclock your GPU by increasing the Core clock and Memory clock without changing the Core voltage. High temperatures can reduce the lifespan of your GPU, not just require higher voltages. Yes, you can safely overclock by slightly raising the core voltage while maintaining low temperatures during heavy use.

There are some factors involved, mainly the quality of your GPU chip. It changes a bit. If you notice crashes in the game after overclocking, it means you pushed the system too far for stable performance at that voltage. Just lower it a bit until things stabilize. Higher temperatures can reduce the lifespan of your GPU, but unless you increase the voltage, it won’t have a big impact.

That's an overclocking guide (I used to do mine). What power supply do you have?

I own a Corsair CX600 and if anyone is curious, I also have an ASUS Strix GTX 970.

Is my PSU classified as 'Tier 2'? It doesn't really matter if the voltage isn't significantly increased. The cx600 should work fine.

What would be excessive? Mostly an amp, but once the voltage goes up it starts to rise quickly.
