Need help restoring your Mac Mini Server's internet connection?
I have a Mac Mini Server, likely from mid-2011 or later. It lacks a CD drive and has been damaged by a fall, causing the drive to click when I boot. The failed drive still has the OS installed. Now I’m stuck with an SSD but the original drive is missing. When I try to boot, I see the Apple logo and loading spinner but nothing else. I’m considering using internet recovery mode, though it doesn’t boot that way. I can enter single-user mode and see verbose output, but nothing else. I’m hoping to install Ubuntu.
The optimal approach involves obtaining a macOS installation disk from the Mac App Store on a different Mac and employing Diskmaker X to generate a bootable USB for setup. If another Mac isn't available, the process becomes significantly more challenging. Installing Ubuntu typically becomes straightforward when you derive a USB from another device (Mac or any) and simply power it on. Ideally, maintaining macOS alongside Ubuntu simplifies disk management. Could you share the macOS version you were using prior to the hard drive issue?

I think you can quickly switch to internet recovery mode by pressing COMMAND+OPTION+R right after turning on your Mac. This should direct you straight to the recovery option. Keep in mind: the version installed was the one that came with your Mac, not necessarily the latest one. You’ll still need to update it. I hope Apple has improved this process since it was quite frustrating.
I'm planning to reinstall it tonight on my Mac and check if I can reach the latest version. It's time to brainstorm ideas for this 2011 Macbook Air, though only 2GB of RAM is a bit disappointing for today's needs (though it remains fully functional). Sadly, the screen is damaged, making it impractical as a laptop.
I attempted this, though I’m not sure if I succeeded. Since you don’t have a Mac keyboard, what’s the Windows version equivalent? What does COMMAND+OPTION+R do on a Windows keyboard? My Mac is missing, probably because of the move. The concept behind this box was to serve as a versatile media center for the living room—it has no other purpose, so I figured it would fit well. Perhaps it could work for your MacBook Air. Otherwise, I’d consider selling it.
