I'm from Malaysia and my budget is about MYR350 for a small upgrade on my old desktop. 2. The goal is to mainly upgrade it into a work computer. I need to open several Chrome tabs, Discord, and Microsoft Office. The post is here to ask for advice on choosing the right CPU and motherboard. 3. Why? I have a separate desktop for gaming. My aim is to make my old desktop more functional and efficient for work. It has some parts that can be reused. I'm considering swapping the Intel Core Duo CPU and the old motherboard to run Windows 10. The components I can still use are: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650, Samsung 500GB hard disk, and a 400w PSU.

Upgrading to a Core 2 Quad Q6600 ensures smooth performance for a work machine. It functions well in practical use, just requiring sufficient RAM.

Your old motherboard runs a 32-bit system with DDR2 4GB RAM. I’m planning to upgrade it to a 64-bit configuration and possibly switch to DDR3 8GB RAM.

The Core 2 Duo supports both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. The issue likely lies with your operating system being the 32-bit version. It doesn't really matter whether it uses DDR2 or DDR3 for your needs. Having 4GB of RAM is sufficient, but 8GB is recommended.

4GB DDR2 modules tend to be costly, yet your board only accommodates two slots, making 8GB memory less affordable in comparison to the price of a ZcPu and the board itself. In most cases, adding an SSD would suffice.

In summary, here’s what I suggest: install an SSD, set up a 64-bit OS, upgrade the RAM, and replace the CPU with a Core 2 Quad Q6600.

It should work fine with around 4GB of RAM, as long as the motherboard is compatible.

Confirming the setup, what kind of power source are you using?
