Hey! I assembled my first HTPC back in 2014. I purchased a 4U server for $30 at a discount, intending to use the case for an abandoned project. I collected the CPU (i7-980), motherboard, RAM, a 250GB SSD, and a $40 power supply. The only missing piece was a case. I spent some time in my dad's workshop and discovered a spare pegboard. With a lot of zip ties and careful sawing, I managed to install everything correctly. That was a while ago—some components failed, others got better, but this build has kept its core intact: the case.

I had my very first CPU which was a 990X from the LGA 1366 X58 platform. Many people think I shouldn’t spend money on such an old system, but for me, just because it’s outdated doesn’t mean I should throw it away. My current storage server uses an old 2011 DDR3 setup because the components are affordable. After building my friend’s gaming PC, I used the spare motherboard and RAM to create a personal project for fun and enjoyment.

They're great, using servers from around 2014. The backup even uses standard DDR3 RAM. It's affordable and dependable. The power costs are low, making the extra 20W about $30 a year in savings.

No worries at all, just wanted to clarify my earlier point. I apologize if my previous explanation came across that way. Could you share more about how it’s used and what performance you’re expecting?

All 24 dimms feature 16gig 1600mhz registered units with dual 10-core low-power xeons. I use a 2.5-inch SSD for the operating system and a SAS RAID card with an 8TB backup drive. The backup process completed in under an hour.
