I'm getting really frustrated! My setup with pfsense on an old HP with an i5 and 4GB RAM has been stable for six months, but lately everything is acting up. I'm using a 70 Mbps connection via Arris modem. After a week of no issues, my speed dropped to just 1 Mbps. It's really annoying. I restored it to the factory settings and reset all interfaces, but it only works for a few days before failing again. The web interface is extremely slow—pages take 15 minutes to load. Browsing is almost impossible. I've changed DNS, PFblockerg, Squid, but the problem persists. The router keeps blocking wan traffic while LAN works fine. Anyone have any idea what's going on? This is really confusing!

You're using the same network interface cards as before.

I use a 4-port setup and don’t worry about the hardware since it runs at full speed after a new installation.

No, I'm not using PFsense on a USB stick.

Have you attempted connecting to the router via SSH, selected option 8, and checked with "top" to identify CPU-heavy processes? Also consider whether the SSD is affecting performance if Squid relies on it for caching. The gradual slowdown you're experiencing is a common problem with SSDs if they aren't maintaining proper cleanups. pfSense doesn't support TRIM on SSDs, which may contribute to this issue.

I checked further and most people agree you can skip the trim except with Squid, which could damage the SSD in a year or so without protection. It’s definitely worth considering.

Which network connections are active? I noticed a pattern with Realtek adapters in pfSense version 2.3 because of a driver problem.

The operating system and data reside in RAM. When using multiple drives, remove one drive to isolate the issue, then reinstall and retest. With a single RAM stick, perform a memory test.

I've reinstalled PFSense as the basic version without IPv6, and everything is working fine. It seems the problem lies with the Squid settings. I've tried numerous configurations—around 100 different ones across about 20 settings—but it still lags. The only change I made was setting up my VPN.
