Does a single 1x1 not operate by itself? It seems some need external power, and I saw one that required a 9-pin connector but can't locate it now.

It's an external power input, though I'm unsure if it's necessary. Will you connect via the 4x PCI-E slot or the bottom PCI port? You'll need a PCI card for that, and a PCI-e won't work.

Huh? Sounds like I might have bought a dongle but it didn’t feel right, so I returned it. 2.0 because I don’t want backward compatibility when it’s not needed.
