I just watched a video explaining how to boost my CPU to 5ghz with the same or nearly identical specs, and it seems to function properly. However, when I launch a game, it drops to about 4.7ghz. I’m curious if this is typical or if it should remain steady at 5ghz.

I’m also new to overclocking, so any advice or tips would be really helpful.

Current setup: CPU i5-8600k, GPU GTX 1070, RAM 16GB 2400MHZ, motherboard MSI Z370 GAMING CARBON PRO, power supply 600W, HDD Seagate 2tb, SSD Kingston 120GB. Temperatures are around 65-80°C.

The overclock isn't stable and might require a higher Vcore or an upgraded LLC. I'm unsure how the MSI board BIOS functions since I use a Gigabyte board. I hope someone can help or check forums for overclocking settings on MSI boards. Below are some useful links you can explore:

Tell me about your temperatures during play and the core voltage you're using.

my core voltage was as the video instructed me to put them
this is the link to the video:

the overclocking to 5ghz starts at around 40 minutes

I don't have access to real-time system data like CPU temperatures. You'll need to check your device's monitoring tools or settings for this information.

what temperatures are your cpu reaching?
it's reaching about 55 to 70 degrees during the game, but it doesn't seem to maintain a consistent 5ghz.

I considered it might be thermal throttling, which is why I checked temperatures. How about your usage? Are you achieving 100% on either the CPU or GPU? It's possible the game doesn't need all available CPU power at that moment...

Your idle temperatures are unusually high, which might mean you're throttling. At 4.9GHz on a 8700K, they should be around 30°C or less—roughly mid-30s. Could you tell me what CPU cooler you have?

I was considering it might be thermal throttling, which is why I checked the temperatures. What about the usage? Are you reaching 100% on either the CPU or GPU? It could just be that the game doesn’t need all the available CPU power to run at that moment... At idle, it’s around 10-20%, but in Task Manager it shows 4.86GHz while CPU-Z says 5000MHz. In-game it’s about 80-90% and it’s playing PubG. The temperatures still look normal, between 55-70.
