MSI H310M PRO-M2 paired with i9 9900K – any ideas?
I'm using the standard model with the case (Thermaltake N25). My VRM voltage is about 45°C at idle and reaches up to 81°C during gaming.
Unfortunately, it won’t be able to run it either way. Just sell the 8400 and the board, following @Mister Woof’s advice, and get a solid z390 board. That’ll be worth its weight in gold. The board will handle throttle, unfortunately.
I wouldn't rely on this interpretation. The board is probably going to power down rather than increase speed.
It's quite intense when just playing games, though maybe not entirely accurate since sensors aren't always positioned perfectly. I think it's getting warmer than expected. A more durable PSU is usually better, especially with cases included. Putting dirty or weak power on top of overloaded voltage regulators on a high-power CPU can cause serious issues. If you're running the 9900k with a new Z board and upgraded graphics, you should also invest in a solid PSU. Look at the tier lists in the cases and power supply forum for guidance.
81c gaming is quite intense right now, especially for the VRMs, and the 9900k isn't being used to its full potential. Attempting any rendering will cause the motherboard to heat up rapidly.
PSUs included with cases are a huge disappointment in terms of build quality. It’s hard to be pleased with that 9900K right now. Running at 81C is fine for gaming with a stock 9900K, but the sensors on such an affordable board are usually quite unreliable. It’s not surprising if actual temperatures exceed that number. Besides the bad sensors, low-end VRMs often lack proper safeguards like OCP and OTP. Normally, the system would cut power if things get too hot or current spikes, but with these cheap components that’s not always the case. To be honest, even on Asrock Z370 boards with some memory, I thought a poorly configured OTP would let the VRM overheat to 110°C or more without shutting down. Sounds promising.
Thanks for the ideas! I plan to replace my motherboard and get a new case, plus a solid PSU soon.
