Hi everyone, just checking in about my MSI H310M PRO-M2 board and the new Intel Core i9 9900K CPU. Everything seems to be working well so far, but I’m curious if this setup could ever cause any damage to the CPU in the long run. I haven’t overclocked it and left the BIOS settings as they are, only using the XMP profile. It’s currently running at 4.7GHz per core, which is fine for me. If there’s any chance it could eventually harm the CPU, I’ll consider replacing the board.

It's more likely your CPU will cause your motherboard to fail, or the board might shut down trying to keep the CPU running. Watch your VRM MOS temperatures closely, and it should slow down when you put in real stress.

Prepare your fire suppression system. Until you secure a solid Z370/Z390 board, ensure adequate airflow to the VRMs, protecting your CPU and possibly other parts. What else are you working on?

I mean, if your motherboard takes a shit because its overheating, there's a chance it takes the CPU with it when it finally pops. This is a really extreme pairing. I would be somewhat hesitant to put a 9900k in my motherboard, and it's worlds better than yours.

Your motherboard isn't built for this level of stress. It may develop thermal problems, which can cause premature failure. A failing motherboard can easily carry any other part along with it, but in this situation the most likely component to be affected (excluding others based on severity) is the CPU. Consider directing a fan straight at the VRMs to assist them until you can upgrade to a better board.

You might combine the 8400, H310 board, and 2666mhz RAM into a single system or sell them, then upgrade to a Z390 with 3200/3600 RAM for your 9900k. What’s really cooling the 9900k?

Plan your purchase for a solid Z370/Z390 board now, and skip the 2070S upgrade. The new Ampere and RDNA2 GPUs will arrive later this year. Do you recall your PSU model? Thermaltake offers good and poor options.

You're still using your current CPU cooler, but the temps look okay. If you decide to switch the motherboard later, it might affect things.
