They definitely need full duplex. The main aim is switching from traditional formats to modern ones like fiber to Ethernet. I set one up in a workplace last week: https://www.fs.com/products/35333.html

Full duplex allows simultaneous communication in both directions, whereas half duplex only handles one at a time.
