I'm just beginning my modded journey through Elder Scrolls Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV. I need to find the best mod manager that fits my requirements. I want it to be easy to use, handle multiple mods smoothly, prevent conflicts, let me switch profiles with different setups, install mods straightforwardly, and keep my game files safe from breaking or clashing. I also heard that NMM doesn’t handle data directories well, but it might have changed recently.

I've relied on NMM consistently without any problems.

I've chosen Mod Organizer because it appears more organized, simplifies creating profiles for various mod collections, and allows for smoother adjustments to mods once the setup is complete.

The way you install mods can affect whether they work smoothly or cause issues. Some tools can help arrange the loading sequence to minimize conflicts. Whether you get mods from one provider or another doesn't change this outcome. NMM doesn’t place mods directly into the game’s folder, so the game’s directory remains untouched unless you manually add a mod there. Certain NMM mods need this manual step, but they aren’t available through the program itself. If Bethesda’s mod site blocks installation to the game folder, those mods won’t appear there. Note: My understanding of Mod Organizer was incorrect—it wasn’t a Bethesda site name. I haven’t played a Bethesda game recently, and I’m concerned about their future mod support since they previously faced backlash when using Steam. However, Bethesda has stated they still intend to offer paid mods.

From what I observed, MO allows installing nmm mods and manual mods without putting them into the data folder.

According to what I understand, NMM includes all the functionalities of MO, though it took some time to implement. I clearly favor NMM. The user preference mainly lies in the GUI design.

Not everything I've seen shares many of these similar MO traits...

After trying a few files for NMM on Skyrim Special Edition, mods were installed and placed in the game's data folder. It looks like I might need to stick with the MO route.

MO stands out compared to other mods for Skyrim. It’s a full virtual install, which is better than NMM that often overwrites existing ones and can cause issues. It handles big files smoothly, which is a nice feature. Managing the installation sequence is straightforward—just drag and drop. NMM can become tricky, especially with many mods, but MO offers reliable tools without forcing conflicts.
