Minecraft 1.8, Customer Apathy Knowledge Gap
It’s surprising that no one is updating for Minecraft 1.8, even though it received huge performance upgrades. The version still struggles with lag and low frame rates, especially when running mods. I’ve tested 154 mods on 1.7.10 with a 4790k and 390x, getting around 30fps occasionally. Even with 1.8 or newer, the experience feels subpar, dropping to 10-15fps. It seems the community hasn’t adapted fast enough, leaving players stuck with outdated performance. Why isn’t everyone moving forward despite the improvements?
It turns out this has been around for quite some time. Many users stick with version 1.7.10 because it feels stable. With my 4670k and GTX 680, I can smoothly achieve over 80 FPS while playing the 1.7.10 update, which I really enjoy. The server load isn’t heavy, and I’m running it on an affordable Atom server from OVH.
Lower the graphics options a bit, I have a 4790k and a 970 and still manage around 60 fps with high settings. As for why few updates exist... moving a mod from 1.7 to 1.8 is a big task. Most major mods need complete rewrites, while smaller ones are usually ported as soon as Forge was available.
I understand precisely what you're referring to, and possibly even know the explanation. The issue with Minecraft 1.7 and earlier on AMD cards stems from the graphics driver not recognizing the game properly. They addressed this in Minecraft 1.8, but I can confirm it's an AMD-related problem. Nvidia cards, on the other hand, perform much better in comparison when playing those older versions. The main drawback of Minecraft 1.8 is its large size and poor optimization, aside from the AMD driver fix.
It's not as smooth as version 1.8. I regularly play with two friends. On a "quad core 3ghz" with 750ti, the game runs under 30 FPS, is choppy, and inconsistent. With a 6600k and Nitro 390x, it's the same. Using a 4790k and MSI 390x gives similar results.
It's been two years now. 1.8 delivered huge performance improvements. Although this might seem like a big overhaul, it's completely justified. If you don't update for 1.8, you'll always fall behind the newer versions unless you're willing to take on even more tasks than what 1.7 to 1.8 handles.
The language used suggests most users could achieve double the current performance. Java wasn’t built for 3D games. The main point is why Notch chose Java. I didn’t investigate further, but I think it might have been a risk or he was very familiar with it then.
It seems the issue might be with a Phenom II or C2Q graphics card. Your setup works well at 1080p with your 4790K and GTX 650ti OC, but not with your GTX 970.
Are there any solutions left, or is it simply about realizing your $400 GPU is useless for this game and you have no options, just give up?
