Microsoft is rolling out a major update for Xbox users today: the ability to play across networks. This long-rumored feature now appears real, allowing PS4, Xbox One, and PC players to enjoy the same game together. Developers creating titles for Xbox One and Windows 10 will need to enable it, while Sony and other platforms must join the effort for seamless cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Seems like a poor choice for most games...

PS4 and Xbox are fine, but what about PC? I’m not sure unless everyone uses the same controls—controller, wheel, mouse and keyboard alike (which is unlikely). That could really help or hurt players trying to shoot with a controller or drive with a keyboard. There are also problems with extra features like auto-aim that might only work for controller users and could actually boost their skills.

I believe there will be checks and balances to ensure fairness. Auto aim in a cross-platform multiplayer game seems unlikely. It’s possible Xbox and PS4 will use mouse and keyboard, similar to how PC already supports controllers. Who knows what might happen?

PC and PS4 had similar experiences in Rocket League for a while, but Microsoft has taken the lead again. Forza Horizon 3 might support crossplay in the future, which would be great. Also, Xbox users could face tough competition in shooters.
