It's not a scam, some memory is tuned for Intel and others for AMD. Yes, manual settings should help. It's mostly XMP that can cause problems sometimes. Personally, I think the claims are overstated. My older Ryzen 3600 works just fine with "3600" RAM, even though it's a first-gen model.
ATX is also an Intel standard, but it doesn't prevent AMD motherboards from utilizing it. MSI uses a feature called A-XMP to enable their AMD boards, such as the B450 Tomahawk, to understand XMP information. The problem isn't that the board can't detect the memory profile.
