I'd guess needing two cans of primer plus two of glossy paint just to be sure if you're painting just one color. If you have three different ones, you should get at least a full can of each for the top coat.

the mobo tray has primer on it already. So I'll be spraying on the black on the whole case as is...unless there is a secret to spray painting? the cabling will be of other colors, the case color will be matte black/flat black. OH, I also neglected to mention, that drive cage at the bottom was stolen from an IBM rig I had in 2000.

Lutfij: How many cans of spray paint do you guys think I need for a finished look? Rustoleum has a new spray paint that comes with primer inside too and works on most surfaces. You should check it out, it will save time. Two cans probably get the job done but if all the inside parts are painted, maybe three is better to be safe. It's smarter to have extra cans around because running out at the end of a project is really frustrating. About your case: if the material is thick enough you can mod some serious stuff and still have a strong case, but if it's not tough enough to hold up, you'll need to decide that yourself. My two cents

Spray cans work best long-term when you really clean the surface well before starting, apply at least two layers of primer, and use three or four layers of paint. I wait about 45 minutes between each layer if possible, and let it dry overnight after the primer goes on the color. For rattle cans (like thinner), using a few thin layers is usually better than trying to cover them in just one thick coat.
