Okay so for some reason it won't let me run the test even after downloading the trial. I downloaded it, but from my base it says I need to register the product first. Even though I did have some things on Imgur you can see there (the link is here). My health isn't great and seems like I'm running low on time. So it makes sense that I am replacing this soon.
It was just a quick reset that saved my stuff and started windows 11 over. I know it wasn't the total delete everyone talks about, but I couldn't find any way to save everything before. But with what they told me to do, things are getting better now. It needs a bit more time to make sure it's okay for the long run, so far it looks fine to me.
144 bad sectors means it's time to throw that hard disk away right now if not sooner. I have stopped using hard disks with just three bad sectors left. Once they start showing up, things will get worse very quickly. Anyway, back up all your important files today, buy a new SSD, and install Windows fresh. I wouldn't trust a hard disk with so many bad sectors to run long again. You'll see a big speed boost when switching from Windows on a hard disk to Windows on an M.2 drive. Note: If you run CHKDSK /F /R, it will scan the whole drive for hidden errors and try to fix them, but doing that command might make the drive unbootable. Be careful. Big mistake. You could lose everything if the hard disk stops working tomorrow. All you really need to backup is your personal stuff (files you can't replace). Collections of MP3/FLAC files, movies, games/apps from third parties, all can be downloaded again. Focus on important documents, spreadsheets, photos, home videos, anything that matters and cannot be lost which is impossible to get replaced. You might only have a few hundred MBs to backup, not 2TB. You've got 2.5TB of SSD storage. Check the space on these drives. Figure out how much personal data is on your hard disk and copy it over to an SSD. Even better, buy some external storage (a portable USB hard drive) and back up there. Looking at this, you still have one empty NVMe slot, so get rid of the Barracuda and put in a new NVMe drive for Windows. If you aren't playing games, you might not need anything bigger than 500GB (preferably 1TB) since the Windows boot drive. 4TB SSDs may run slightly slower than 2TB or 1TB, but it's worth checking.
Well... you know, I got a new SSD yesterday and cloned my old hard drive onto it following a tutorial. That worked great at first, but then when I tried to turn off the computer, it started blue screening again and again. Definitely not following any guide for that last time, so I'll be careful next time. So I had to get a fresh Windows install and go through everything properly, which wiped everything from the drive. I didn't have too many personal files to worry about, just some drawings I made and a bunch of reference images. Even though I lost access to those specific art files for editing, I can still download them right away since I posted them online. There were also some settings in my drawing program that got changed, but it's not really that big a deal. I actually had the artworks on a USB drive before, but they got overwritten by the Windows install. Oops. Definitely learned this lesson: trying to skip steps or cut corners just isn't worth risking your files. Back when I was starting out, my big mistakes were losing important files from valuable drives. My hard drives or SSDs would just fail, even right up until today. Nowadays, backups are super important, especially if you have work that matters to you. In what works best for me in most cases? It's to make a clean install of the operating system and run an SFC file checker so the system is working fine. Then update all the OS software and install your programs like that too. Back up your important data on a separate drive. Run regular maintenance checks on the whole computer to make sure files stay safe. Take some time to relax with your PC setup. Having so many bad blocks on your Windows hard disk makes it very unlikely that cloning to an SSD was 100% successful. Some files might be corrupted, and others could just be missing. If these missing or broken parts are part of the Windows operating system, you would get those Blue Screens Of Death. I'm surprised the cloning app finished the job successfully. I've seen Macrium stop working when it finds a problem on your source drive, forcing you to manually fix things or do a clean install of Windows. It can take time and effort to track down all your old data, especially if you have forgotten where they are stored. I try not to keep important files in my Windows Profile (like Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos). Instead, I create folders with more useful names that live on other drives. This way, even if your profile stops working and you can't repair it, there is less work involved trying to recover files from the old (broken) profile. For important photos and videos, I keep multiple copies on different computers and servers. A minimum of three copies is standard; often there are far more. You never know when ransomware, drive failure, a flood, lightning, or something else bad will happen. If your system is up and running with a fresh install of Windows on the new SSD (which is much faster isn't it?), then now is the time to check what data you have left behind and start making backups. Never put all your data on just one computer. If the power supply unit fails, it could destroy every single hard disk and SSD you own. Similarly, if you leave a USB backup device plugged in constantly, that device could break down or get infected with ransomware. Keep at least three copies of whatever matters most in three different places. These could be other drives or computers, USB memory sticks, portable hard disks, or SSDs, and also the Cloud. A copy stored off-site (like at work or a friend's house) helps protect you from fire or theft inside your own home.
