I received my old PC from a friend who brought it to a repair shop because it was running slowly. It used to boot in just 1-2 minutes, but now they said the issue lies on the motherboard and it’s not worth fixing. I’m planning to check for signs but might need a new graphics card. I’m looking for advice on finding compatible or similar models, especially ones with the same look. Thanks in advance!

I’d install an SSD. It’s unclear what might be wrong with the motherboard, since HDDs tend to slow down and stop working over time.

That's accurate, but the technician mentioned a specific issue with the motherboard (capacitor or resistor possibly).

Without correct checks, I can't determine how it affects the speed.

He mentioned it's completely worn out, so I'm pretty sure I'll locate it (though my friend didn't remember). Likely I'll have to get a new graphics card, which is what I'm asking for (I know checking eBay is an option but maybe other choices exist).

Does it start up? If yes, it should be okay and just requires an SSD for better performance. Skipping proper diagnostics means there’s little value in purchasing anything. Remember, the board itself can be as expensive as the system, so buying a core 2 or AMD Phenom PC again might be the best choice and save you money.

Yeah, it should start up now. I don’t know why he claimed something was burned out, but usually shops replace SSDs quickly for profit. I’ll take a look if there’s any damage. Not saying an SSD won’t help, but since they said it was the motherboard at the shop, that seems unlikely. I checked prices—around 15 to 35 euros—and there are several options. Also, on eBay I saw something called 'ddr2,' but the HP site lists it as 'ddr3.' So maybe I need a specific board.

It's a disposable board. I used the same one before.

Starting point is around 2008 with an all-AMD setup. Recommend using a SSD alongside the highest RAM speed and largest modules your board supports. If components fail, replace them unless you're comfortable with SMD soldering and minor risks. Note: this seems to match an ASUS board, possibly AM2—your M3N78-EM looks similar and should be available on eBay for a small fee.

Let me guess... 'trash capacitors' right? So any suggestions what to replace it with? Im pretty sure it's am3 unless the HP site is wrong... and yes looks like Asus even though they don't call it Asus... yeah p sure I bought it in 2008. why do you think there was no 'proper' diagnostics? he apparently even checked the gpu...! (although I cannot be certain what those markings really mean, or if they were always there - looks kinda 'freshly made' tho) And I have already found *three* capacitors (or whatever those blue ticking time bombs are called...) on the mobo that don't look so good.. here's one of them! Actually I do... but it's not worth it really as soldering iron, parts, etc would probably cost more than the mobo! if it was the gpu however, that would be worth it (those X1950 GT are freaking expensive)
