I bought a deal on eBay for slightly below market used components. I got an Intel Core i9 10920x with 12 cores and 24 threads for around $250 USD, plus an ASUS ROG Strix x299-E Gaming II motherboard for $189 USD... It was a solid upgrade. That should handle most tasks... unless you're doing advanced scientific work and need more power... I'm always looking for bargains.

Lga 4189 is already finished. No updates have appeared in over a year. Lga4677 has been the latest since January. You're not receiving newer CPUs from what you mentioned; some of those are among the top options available. Remember, Threadripper works well but operates in different settings. Eco mode offers exceptional efficiency and massive power (excluding Threadripper 1000). Performance mode leans more toward Ryzen, while Balanced provides a middle ground.

I appreciate how you wrote everything out without needing to read my post—it shows I can get an i5-12600 for under that price and a better motherboard, which puts me on the workstation or server side. I don’t know your intentions really, though. "Unless you’re doing some very scientific work and need more than that..." I am. Ableton requires 64 threads, so I won’t be able to do this on a consumer i-core platform. That means I’m aiming for workstation or server CPUs, as expected.

Hmm, I didn’t mention anything new. I said a cheap low-end CPU around $120 with an LGA 4189 would let me jump to higher-end chips that are selling for $5k to $8k now, but they’ll drop below $200 soon. Threadripper can switch modes however it wants—do you want one? Because if I have to buy, it has to fit the budget. And that’s the best value I’ve seen so far, as I’ve listed above.

The Core i9 10920X is a high-end HEDT component, not suitable for consumer use. It relies on Xeon processors and supports 64 threads, indicating enterprise requirements. I also use Autodesk applications occasionally.

You meant to confirm your view on the benchmark CPU's performance. I believe it will truly surpass raw power, while the Xeons with over 40k benchmarks are already strong. I don’t see much value in that setup for the price you mentioned. The cheapest option I found online is around $550, which still doesn’t justify the cost compared to the performance you’re expecting. I guess it’s a bit of a stretch, but thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It can handle everything I'm providing—plus more. Many users push the i9-12900k to its limits with certain plugins, and I'm realizing my Xeon X5670 is no longer sufficient. I've already had to freeze things to lower CPU usage and employ various workarounds to stay within limits. My rendering times have shifted dramatically: what was once acceptable for the whole project now feels unreasonable when processing 80–120 stems of every element in a single MP3. Last time it took me three hours. It's not just about core count or single-core speed; it's about overall raw processing power. Having too many cores packed into too few can actually hurt performance, especially when running 80–120 channels with multiple synths and plugins on the signal path. This isn't a typical gaming rig—I'm building it within the same budget.

Ableton demands strong single-core speed plus good thread handling. The Xeons fall short in this area, making it wise to choose a CPU with better single-core performance rather than just more cores. I now fully grasp your goals and can give you clearer guidance. Now we focus on what works best in your workflow: Ableton handles multithreading decently, but each track uses just one thread. Adding many simultaneous effects switches to multi-threaded processing. I personally use Ableton and FL Studio, so I see the problem clearly. The Xeons are the least ideal but still a viable choice if you find the right model. I’d recommend the higher-clocked 24-core option—it’ll give you better single-core results, which should outperform the much lower 2GHz base with 32 cores you currently have (which also doesn’t significantly boost overall performance).

We weren<|pad|>, so we need separate hardware solutions. I need a workstation while you handle a server farm. I’d check eBay and Newegg for discounts. Aliexpress is risky—like ordering from Wish. You might get some decent gear there, but be cautious. Tyan is a solid brand; research the parts you’re interested in.
