I overlooked mentioning that task recently... when your partitions are resized and Linux is installed, the mac OS X disk utility might encounter problems. After shrinking the OS X partition with the Linux tool, I lost the ability to adjust any settings in OS X, and the size preview displayed incorrectly. This situation could arise if you later remove Linux and leave only OS X running on the system.

It arises when software fails to get updates since it can't support the current OS version (such as Firefox, etc.), making it hard to install newer apps that need features only available in newer OS releases. Missing security patches for both the operating system and installed programs is a significant issue. In terms of optimization, you're correct—OS X generally runs better on Macs than Linux, likely because it's been fine-tuned for those machines.
