You're planning a dual-boot setup with both machines, which is great! The MacBook Pro and PowerBook G4 are both capable of running Linux, though you'll need to adjust the installation steps slightly for each. Make sure to check compatibility with your specific Linux distribution and consider using tools like GRUB for boot management.
You wouldn't necessarily need a brand-new GCC version for C++ development. The MacOS release you're using is older than the latest stable GCC, and it doesn't include support for modern C++ standards like C++11 or later. Apple also avoids distributing GPLv3 software in their operating system.
You're aware I'm using both operating systems. Neither of them is my primary laptop. This is just for fun.
