Making a mistake is natural, but learning from it matters.

You can perform a fresh installation once the upgrade is complete—simply burn the ISO to a USB drive or DVD, then carry out the clean installation afterward.

I made a mistake and am now stuck using Windows 8, even version 8.1.

A file was downloaded, but I haven’t removed the backup yet—just the software distribution. I think I followed the instructions properly. Also, you’ve been assisting on all four platforms instead of just Microsoft support, which is really helpful even though I’m still facing issues.

But when I try to log in, there are no updates left. I plan to do another restart tomorrow and give it another shot, but honestly, desktops are meant for that kind of situation—your laptop might be fine even if it breaks, you still have a solid desktop option.

A new setup with your Windows 8.1 key should work for Windows 10.
