I need your modem to even consider this option. The modem/router must understand what tags to use, or you’d have to set up sub-interfaces on the physical port for a managed network—otherwise it might not work. If your setup is flexible, you could connect both modems’ management ports into a switch and route one cable between switches or computers to serve as the management network. From what I understand, part of the IP header is already reserved for VLAN tagging. If that’s active, just ensure the slot remains available. The MTU size shouldn’t decrease; if it does, you can increase the payload capacity. Turn on Jumbo Frames on the switch.

They are linked together and since it's a home network, it doesn't really require a private LAN setup. It's handy to still access them from my laptop, and you can use all the extra ports on those modems or routers as additional switches on the network, making it a worthwhile investment.

For the same reason, all my servers stay on the LAN. Security isn’t a major worry, and the benefits justify the changes needed for BIOS tweaks or new installations. A replacement switch is necessary. I’ve installed a 24-port one.
