I have a Ryzen 7 7700X installed on an ASUS TUF X670E with BIOS 0821, and a Dark Rock Pro 4 running a fresh Windows 11 setup. I'm noticing elevated temperatures during idle—between 67-75°C while browsing or watching YouTube. When the system starts up, it reaches around 85°C, which is acceptable, but the idle temps remain high. I've tried enabling manual eco mode with PBO limits (PPT: 88 TDC:75 EDC:150) and the BIOS 65W eco setting, but no improvement. Even at full fan speed, temperatures stay unchanged. This suggests a potential issue with either the processor or the motherboard. The only monitoring tool I use is hwmonitor, and my suspicion points to an incorrect case configuration since I previously had a 7700K running at max 75°C before.

Thanks for the response. The setup you described is typical for an old CM Scout 2. At idle, a CPU running around 76W is quite normal.

My 7700x performs at 40c despite PBO -30 during WoW raids. 76c isn't typical for idle.

The 7700x leads the 5000 series in power, so you need a solid cooler—think of it like following Spider-Man’s wisdom: “with great power comes great responsibility.” Upgrading to a 5800x is fine, but your current setup is already pushing things hard. If your high-end 8-core configuration demands a robust 360A AIO or more, you’ll need a premium cooler to keep everything running smoothly.

I also play games at 42°C with PBO-30, it feels great. Idle time is spent browsing the web near 34°C.

Technically, whenever you move the mouse or perform any action, the Ryzen processor isn't idle. I haven’t focused much on the 7950X running at full idle—though I’ve noticed it can hit 92% CPU in the 50s during light use—but my 5900X stays around the 30s, and even a simple mouse movement pushed it into the 50s. This is using a custom loop.

I run at 35°C on my 5800X with the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE paired with a Corsair 4000 D.

I swapped the cooler and switched the paste to Quiet's version. Here are the outcomes: PBO -10 without eco mode – Gayming (BFV): watching a YouTube video after BFV, it’s better but warmer side-wise, took about 10 minutes to hit 95°C. This was with PBO -10 max temp at 85 and AMD ECO 65W in BIOS. After playing BFV, I think it’s worth mentioning I have a 3080Ti. I’m a bit let down by how hot the CPU is, but performance is solid. A few questions: why can’t I see eco mode on Ryzen Master? And is the HWMonitor's 90W draw normal for the 65W ECO profile?

The 7700x is built to target 90% or higher performance. Even with the 85C restriction active, you're still achieving that level. If you're still hitting 90%+, open the Advanced View for more details.
