Issues with connecting Western Digital MyBookLive NAS following the latest Windows 10 release.
Hi, I see you're having trouble with your Western Digital MyBookLive after the latest Windows update. It seems like some important areas are no longer reachable. You can still access certain shared folders, but public ones require entering credentials. Large files like ISO images aren't loading, and mounting them is not possible. You can't copy these files from the network to your local machine either. The issue is frustrating, and I haven’t received any responses on the Microsoft forum. Anyone have suggestions or solutions?
Hi S.A.G.B., Start a Linux Live USB: http://releases.ubuntu.com/18.04/ You’ll need Rufus to create a bootable drive at https://rufus.ie. After booting, check if your system works without issues—then we can proceed from there. If not, the issue might be permissions on your storage and we can address that.
I prefer not to run Windows 10 because it frequently alters settings, causes issues, and adds unnecessary software and tracking features. I stick with Windows Server 2019 and keep a dual-boot setup using the older Windows 7.
I used to work well with Windows XP, but it doesn’t seem to function now either. I plan to restart it to check. I’m unsure which settings on the NAS I can adjust since the interface is very basic and offers few options.
Restarted the system and results remained unchanged. Verified firmware update status—current version is up to date. Last update recorded in 2017. Performed quick diagnostics with no issues found. Completed full scan; no problems detected. Accessing folders via a "Network Location" shortcut works fine for small files, but large files cause access failures. Mounting ISOs is also no longer possible.
Well... one piece of good news... Windows XP can read public shares now. Windows 10 still doesn't. And XP is copying the large files. Looks like I may have to purchase and dump everything to an external drive. Update: Windows 10 mounted the ISO copied through XP onto a USB stick. So it is definitely Windows 10 that can't read the NAS through the network properly. (Network file size limitation?) Also Windows 10 won't allow my YouTube video downloader to download video to the NAS.
I discovered part of the explanation. Guest access in SMB2 was turned off across all Windows 10 versions due to security concerns. SMB1 is no longer present in Windows 10, and the update process removes it. Even after re-enabling it, access remains restricted (despite claims). I’m now required to set up network connections to specific folders and provide login details. Essentially, I must create individual user accounts for each device on the network, or else the NAS will misbehave and block users using the same credentials. The file size issue still persists. XP is the only solution that seems to help with my files. I don’t use Linux. My first try was disappointing. I’ve only ever used it for Pi-Hole.
I discovered a way to retrieve my files from MyBookLive by enabling FTP access and logging in as an FTP client on my network. The main advantage is regaining access to my data, though the process is slow and prevents me from directly mounting ISO files until they’re downloaded.
Western Digital addressed my inquiry. They confirmed the details regarding updates to Windows 10. They recommended assigning each folder a drive letter through the Network Browser (not under "This PC"). The guidance is available at: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/de...6#subject1 So far this has resolved the ISO mounting problem. Additionally, enabling the Network Browse feature for SMB 1 instructions can be found here: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4155 Update... Spoke too soon... this only worked on my desktop and not on my laptop. Microsoft’s update also affected my LAN messenger, so I now need an alternative.
