I question this claim. Typically, Ethernet cables meet strict standards. Also, he mentioned he was handling a 40-foot run—definitely not an unusual distance.

You only find out when you attempt it. Others have shared comparable problems here earlier. Occasionally, it's a misaligned or contaminated pin in the Ethernet connection on the computer.

I think it would help to narrow down the problem by adjusting settings one at a time and observing the results. Since link speed hasn't been an issue for me, it's hard to say what else to suggest.
